What is Sunu Thiossane?

Sunu Thiossane, which means "Our Roots, Our Heritage" in Wolof, is a youth development organization founded in 2011 and based in Dakar, Senegal.

Our mission: Lighting the way for Senegal's next generation of visionaries and leaders by providing access to quality education, fostering technological literacy and nurturing cultural and artistic talent.

Over the past 12 years, we've grown from 40 students in 2011 to over 450 today.

What is Sunu Thiossane's philosophy?

Our philosophy is based on two fundamental principles in Wolof:

  • "Xam Sa Bópp" - Know thyself
  • "Geum Sa Bopp" - Believe in yourself

We firmly believe that understanding one's identity and maintaining unshakeable self-confidence are the keys to success in life. Our Africa-focused approach is designed to uplift and empower individuals in Africa.

What programs do you offer?

Sunu Thiossane offers four main programs:

  • English immersion - Program integrating English learning in Summer camp, after-school, day school and Saturday programs
  • STEAM UP - Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics with practical opportunities
  • Learning Across Continents (LAC) - Cultural exchange program with partner universities and organizations
  • College Access & Career Services - Academic advising, scholarships, mentoring and exam preparation

What is the "Xam Sa Bopp" program (6-12 years)?

Xam Sa Bopp stands for "Know Thyself" and covers ages 6 to 12.

This six-year program focuses on :

  • Social development activities
  • Cultural arts programming
  • Learn about African history, culture and heritage
  • Cultivate a strong sense of identity and pride
  • Building character and promoting self-esteem

What is the "Geum Sa Bopp" program (13-18 year-olds)?

Geum Sa Bopp stands for "Believe in Yourself" and covers ages 13 to 18.

This rite of passage program implements three paths to success:

  • Open-mindedness - Developing critical thinking and curiosity
  • Healthy and ethical lifestyle choices - Promoting well-being and values
  • Educational and professional success - University preparation and career guidance

Students graduate at 18 with their BAC (equivalent to the International Baccalaureate).

Do you offer online programs?

Yes, we offer hybrid programs combining :

  • Face-to-face classes for interaction and hands-on experience
  • Comprehensive online activities including virtual classes
  • Interactive learning modules
  • Online homework and digital resources

This approach ensures uninterrupted, flexible learning for all our students.

What kind of academic support do you offer?

We offer full academic support:

What cultural exchange programs are available in 2026?

We are offering three cultural exchange programs in 2026:

  • Kenya → Rwanda Tech and Science program (March, 2 weeks) - FCFA 4,500,000
  • USA (Chicago, DC, NY) English Immersion Summer Camp (July 1-19) - FCFA 5,000,000
  • Japan (Yokosuka & Tokyo) Education and Cultural Exchange (Dec. 22 - Jan. 5) - FCFA 4,500,000

All programs are open to young people aged 8 to 18.

What does the Kenya-Rwanda program include?

Sunu Thiossane's first Tech & Science exchange!

An 18-day trip combining STEM discovery and cultural connections:

  • Hands-on STEM workshops with local science and technology initiatives
  • Visits to innovation clusters
  • Nairobi National Park
  • Kigali Genocide Memorial
  • Cultural exchange nights with East African cuisine, music and traditions
  • Daily Islamic lessons and mosque visits

What does Summer Camp in the USA include?

Language immersion program in three major American cities:

  • Daily English workshops with native speakers
  • Visits to museums, parks and historic sites
  • Cultural exploration in Chicago, Washington DC and New York
  • Cultural nights exploring global traditions through food, music and stories
  • Visits to renowned mosques in each city
  • Learning sessions led by an Ustaz

What does the program in Japan include?

Discover Japanese culture in Yokosuka and Tokyo:

  • Interactive workshops in Japanese art, calligraphy and technology
  • Visits to cultural sites such as the Imperial Palace
  • Collaborative activities with local students
  • Visits to mosques to understand Islamic architecture
  • Discussions led by an Ustaz

Are Islamic lessons compulsory?

Yes, all our cultural exchange programs include daily Islamic lessons. These activities include:

  • Visits to local mosques to pray and learn about their history
  • Understanding Islamic architecture and teachings
  • Sessions led by an Ustaz to discuss Islamic values
  • Fostering intercultural understanding and authentic spirituality

What is your success rate for US visas?

We maintain a remarkable success rate of 100% for our cultural trips to the United States!

Thanks to our strong relationship with the U.S. Embassy over the past 11 years, all our participants have been able to travel and return successfully. Our annual cultural exchanges to the USA are the only travel opportunity for 6-18 year-olds in our region.

How much do cultural exchange programs cost?

Rates for 2026 :

  • Kenya → Rwanda: 4,500,000 FCFA
  • USA (Chicago, DC, NY): 5,000,000 FCFA
  • Japan (Yokosuka & Tokyo): FCFA 4,500,000

What's included in the cost?

Total cost includes :

  • Visa processing fee and appointment
  • Program insurance
  • Return flight (group rate)

What is the payment schedule?

Payment in 5 instalments:

  • 1st payment - December 25, 2025: 500,000 FCFA
    (Non-refundable: visa, appointment and program fees)
  • 2nd payment - January 25, 2026
  • 3rd payment - March 25, 2026
  • 4th payment - April 25, 2026
  • 5th payment - May 25, 2026

Payment amounts 2 to 5 depend on the program chosen.

What is the refund policy?

Important information: The first payment of 500,000 FCFA is non-refundable.

This amount covers :

  • Visa application processing fees
  • Consular meetings
  • Program registration
  • Program assurance

For other payments, please contact us for specific refund conditions.

Who can participate in Sunu Thiossane programs?

Regular programs (Dakar) : Young people aged 6 to 18

International cultural exchanges : Young people aged 8 to 18

We welcome all young people, regardless of their socio-economic background. Our programs are designed for young people from disadvantaged neighborhoods in Dakar and other parts of Senegal, as well as for students from public, private and international schools.

Are programs available all year round?

Yes, we offer year-round programs including :

  • After-school program - Regular sessions throughout the school year
  • Saturday program - Weekly workshops and activities
  • Day school - Complete school program
  • Summer Camp - Intensive summer camp

International cultural exchanges take place on specific dates (see program 2026).

Do you work with schools?

Yes, absolutely! We have established partnerships with :

  • Public schools in Dakar's disadvantaged neighborhoods

We integrate our programs (arts, technology and cultural education) into the formal education system and offer awareness-raising programs for young people.
